Allergy/Intolerance Roulette

Do you ever play roulette with your intolerances/allergies? By that I mean take a gamble on whether you still have that intolerance. At the weekend I sat staring at a bag of Wotsits wondering if they were as good as I remembered.  My allergies were diagnosed when I was a child (school age) and it has been 20+ years without Wotsits in my life. I ate the bag, they were cheesy delicious but I paid the consequences for the next three days.

As a child you are told that there is a good chance you will grow out of your allergies and eczema. I have had stages in my life where I could tolerate small amounts of cheese, chocolate or cake. I can not explain why this happens but these days everything containing an allergen is off limits.  I am even debating whether I can be effected by cross contamination.  I have never had problems with this before but recently I have had a few mystery stomach aches and I cannot figure out why.

I have spent a large portion of my life wishing I was “normal” when it came to food.  I no longer want to be the awkward one when making dinner plans with friends. I hate the fuss and attention that comes from having allergies.   The questions people ask and the doubts on people’s faces.  You know that look, the one where they judge you as a fussy eater (we have celebrity diets to thank for that).  I have even been told I am too fat to have allergies.  My mother tells me I vomited continually as a baby but they told her I was a greedy baby because I was eating my foods and gaining weight. In hindsight I was allergic but in the 1970's Mum says allergies were not talked about so it never crossed her mind I could have them. It sounds like the perfect excuse but I came to the conclusion that part of my body's reaction to an allergen is weight gain.

It occurred to me that medical advice has been thin on the ground.  After the initially childhood diagnosis I never sort medical advice again and just lived my life how my parents taught me.  Every now and again it crosses my mind “Could I have grown out of my allergies?” and that leads to a dare devil attempt at eating Wotsits or other foods containing my allergens.  I recall a few occasions when I approached GP’s for advice.  When concerned about calcium intake I was told “can you not have a bit of cheese every now and again?”  Most recently when I spoke of having more frequent reactions I was told if my lips and throat were not swelling up then not to worry about it. The mind boggles but each time I walk away thinking I am probably more knowledgeable than the Doctors.  I also realise how incredibly lucky I was that  the Doctor I saw as a child was wise enough to figure out why I was covered in eczema, suffering from asthma, glue ear and swollen joints.

I guess this blog post is a bit of a personal rant it’s not intended for a sympathy vote. I’ve coped all these years with my allergies and I will keep on managing them.  I am only human and I have my grumpy days where my stomach seems against me.  There are days when I would do anything to sink my spoon into a tub of Ben & Jerry’s or bite into a Galaxy chocolate bar.

Disclaimer - This post was inspired by my own stupidity but I also remember I had read a blog post by  Pig In The Kitchen so that was an influence. The pack of Wotsits I devoured belonged to my Boyfriend. I do not advocate taking risks with allergies if you have life threatening reactions.

Corine de Farme - Natural Skincare?

This is the second time I have been approached by a French Skin care brand. Obviously not all skin care is created equal but once again I have discovered a brand that is not quite as it claims. Corine de Farme have started to launch in the UK. They have a partnership with Disney and launched four baby toiletries  with dual branding into Sainsbury's, Ocado, Boots and Amazon.  They have also launched into Sainsbury's with feminine care products.

Here's an extract from the email I received - A minimum 95% natural ingredients, Paraben free, Alcohol free, Phenoxyethanol free, Phthalate free, (allergen-free) fragrance. All products are also hypoallergenic & dermatologically tested. Clearly we do not claim to be 100% natural but we do strive to make our products with as high a natural ingredient content as possible. Although Phenoxyethanol is a natural ingredient we avoid using it where possible as it can also be a cause of irritation or adverse reaction.

I realised that I had looked at the feminine products in Sainsbury's the other week. I remember picking it up because of the free from ingredient list then promptly returning it to the shelf after discovering it contains SLES. Sodium lauryl ether sulphate (aka sodium laureth sulphate SLES) or sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) are both inexpensive foaming agents. Sodium laureth sulfate is often regarded as less irritating than sodium lauryl sulfate. Both dry out your skin and are considered carcinogenic (the jury is out on the later information is conflicting).  Often you will see a product say it is free from SLS but it will contain SLES.  It is up to you how you feel about these ingredients. Personally I avoid both because I see no difference between the two when it comes to my skin and eczema.

I follow Mademoiselle Nature and I asked her for some advice.  She confirmed my suspicions.  She does not believe the 95% natural claims and questions the preservative system used to replace parabens and phenoxyethanol.

I googled Corine de Farme ingredients and Boots wesbite popped up.  The following ingredients are for the Corine de Farme Disney Winnie the Pooh lotion (link).  Who on earth wants to smoother their precious baby with paraffin?  I don't know about you but when a product claims to include ingredients from "natural origin" I expect to see ingredients that I would find outside my own front door. The only ingredient from nature that I can see is Calendula. Aqua; Glycerin; Paraffinum Liquidum; Cetearyl Alcohol; Phenoxyethanol; Glyceryl Stearate; PEG-100 Stearate; Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer; 1;2-Hexanedol; Caprylyl Glycol; Parfum; Sodium Hydroxide; Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract; Glucose; Tropolone; Sodium Benzoate; Potassium Sorbate; Caramel

Here are the ingredients for the body wash from the same baby range (link).
Aqua; Sodium Laureth Sulphate; Cocamidopropyl betaine; Sodium Chloride; Glycerine; PEG-200; Hydrogenated Glyceryl Palmate; Sorbitol; Citric Acid; PEG-7; Glyceryl Cocoate; Sodium Benzoate; Parfum; Potassium Sorbate; Sodium Hydroxide

The Intimate Care Shower Cream can be found on Sainsbury's grocery website and the ingredients are listed as Aqua, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Chloride, Glycerin, Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate, Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate, Parfum, PEG-200 Hydrogenated Glyceryl Palmate, Lactic Acid, Styrene/Acrylates Copolymer, Sodium Benzoate, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Allantoin, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Butylene Glycol, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Jasminum Officinale Flower Extract, Sodium Citrate.

There are a number of ingredients in these products that are associated with allergies. If you would like to learn more simply search them on EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetics Database.  If you are serious about what you put on your skin and your child, then avoid this brand.  Do not pay attention to the hype. This brand now joins the same faux natural list as Sanex, Lush, La Roche Posey and Yves Rocher.

Sunday Catch Up (23) - TK Maxx & Vegan Cupcakes

So you guessed correctly I made cupcakes last weekend .  This time it was Vegan Basic Chocolate Cupcakes.

I also had a spending spree in TK Maxx and found a number of free from skin care products.

I love The Jelly Bean Factory and picked up a tube of the Natural jelly beans (website link).  100% Natural flavours and free from artifical colours, gluten, gelatine and nuts

I discovered Depth shave cream (website link) in the clearance section for £2.  I am not sure about the fragrance Sea Berry it's a bit strange. This brand is 70% Organic, SLS Free, 100% Natural Aroma Blends, 100% Vegetarian, Artificial Colour Free, No Animal Testing

Geoskincare (website link) is a brand from New Zealand.  I picked up the Hydrating Hand & Body Lotion.  I had not heard of this brand before now but have discovered Love Lula plan to stock products. Free from phenoxyethanol, sodium lauryl sulphate, parabens, propylene glycol, triethanolamine, isopropyl alcohol, pegs, deas, edtas, mineral oil, petrochemicals, artificial colours, artificial fragrances and genetically modified ingredients.

I found NovExpert (website link) Comfort Cream in the clearance section reduced to £5. I know very little about this French brand but the free from list is impressive.  Not only are products cruelty free but you will not find Preservatives, Fragrance, Mineral Oil, Silicone, Chemical Filter, Essential Oil, Coloring, Propylene Glycol, PEG, Phtalate, Triethanolamine, Tetrasodium EDTA, BHT– BHA, Lanolin and Alumine.

The best bargain find of the day was Louise Galvin (website link) Mother To Be Conditioner for £2. I will write a full review for this as I think it's brilliant (and no I am not pregnant!). Louise Galvin is an environmentally friendly company and products are not tested on animals. Free from artificial preservatives, sulphates, parabens, silicone, petrochemicals, synthetic fragrances and polymers.

Method Cleaning Products

You know me every now and then I throw in a random review of natural cleaning products. I try to limit chemicals in my home but I am not perfect.  I am a little lazy and avoid Aggie & Kim natural cleaning tips (website link)instead I grab what is available in the Supermarket.  A while back Method Cleaning (website link) products were on offer and they worked out at £2 a bottle so I picked up the Bathroom cleaner (link).

The scent of the bathroom cleaner is very pleasant from eucalyptus and mint. I do not struggle with my breathing when spraying this around the bathroom. This can be a common problem for me with main stream household cleaners. However, I do feel it lets me down with performance.  This makes a perfectly adequate surface cleaner but despite the manufacturer's claim I do not feel it removes greasy soap scum.  The problem with using balm and oil cleanser is they have a habit of building up residue round the sink (or is that just in my sink?).  I often have a nice brown tan line from foundation and cleanser and I feel Method lets me down when trying to remove this.

What I do like about Method is they are approved by PETA as a cruelty free and vegan company.  Products are non toxic (naturally derived ingredients) and environmentally friendly.  I recommend you take time reading the website to learn more about their practices.  Whilst this bathroom cleaner was not up to my standards I am happy to use for other purposes around the home.

Everyday Favourite Products

I thought I would write a little update on my current skin care routine. These are products that I have been using for a number of months and have repurchased.

Dr Organic Manuka Face Scrub – it takes me ages to finish a tube, but this is my 2nd purchase since reviewing (review link)

Dr Organic Manuka Face Mask – a recent purchase, I do not use face masks on a regular basis but have found myself reaching for this one. Look out for an upcoming review.

Bodhi –  I quickly fell in love with this brand and have gifted to friends, pictured here is Mint The which was a Birthday Gift, I absolutely adore this fragrance. It’s fresh and perfect for summer weather. I also think it helps unblock my stuffy nose, a symptom from hayfever (review link)

Livpurely Coconut & Vanilla Moisturiser – this was part of a beauty swap and I adore it, the fragrance is heavenly. (review link)

Dr Organic Pomegranate Cream – a wonderful budget moisturiser and a little goes a long way, I am still using the same jar which I reviewed in April. (review link)

Tropic Pure Plant Vitamin Toner – a rediscovery which I am enjoying every day. (review link)

Organic Surge Mositure Boost Shampoo – I think this is now my third tube, I like how it lathers, it is affordable and does not irritate my scalp. (review link)

Giovanni 50/50 Conditioner – this is my second bottle it takes me several months to use this product up as I need the tinest amount, a great conditioner which has yet to be beaten. (review link)

Deep Steep Body Mist – I am still using up the same bottle that I reviewed several months back, I do not use daily as I am a bit forgetful but I love the fragrance, perfect to freshen up with (review link)

Salcura Gentle DermaSpray – I have just repurchase my second bottle, resurrected from a drawer, I now can not be without, by far the best product for my eczema, the spray is cooling and calms itching.  A little tip for eczema sufferers is to keep creams/spray in fridge, the cooling sensation can be very nice especially if skin is hot and sticky from warm weather or irritation. (review link)

100% Organics – At the moment I try a new cleanser every month and this is the current one which I have been using every day. (review link)

Green People Eye Cream – this is the same tube I reviewed, I often forget to apply but I do like this, lasts ages and budget friendly (review link)

Antipodes Rejoice Day cream* – can you believe this is the same tube I reviewed back in May.  It’s like Mary Poppins handbag it never runs out. I have used this once a day since it was sent to me, defiantly great value for money (review link)

Let me know if you have tried any of these products.  Also did you enjoy this post would you like to see them on a regular basis?

Tropic Pure Plant Skin Care Vitamin Toner

I wanted to revisit a product I briefly reviewed last year (link).  You all know my favourite skincare brand is Tropic Pure Plant Skincar(link). This is a brand I have followed for many years, before I started blogging. Last year facial toner was not part of my beauty routine but in recent months I can see the benefits for my skin.  You will have notice I have become fickle with toners, I haven't been repurchasing the same one.  After finishing up everything I already owned I decided to go back to Tropic Vitamin Toner.

Tropic products are vegan approved, BUAV approved plus free from alcohol, parabens, mineral oils, petrochemicals and synthetic fragrances.  The ingredients for the Vitamin Toner are Aloe Vera Juice, Rose Water, Orange Blossom Water, Vegetable Glycerin, Vitamin C, Cucumber Extract, Pomegranate Extract, Cranberry Extract, White Tea Extract, Gentle Preservative System (phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin extract).

The range has had another makeover. The outer box lists the ingredients in English and below this the INCI version.  I have not seen this before normally INCI ingredients are listed with English in brackets.

The bottle has changed to a spray top which to be honest is a bit of a love/hate for me.  Spritzing my face is refreshing but I do like to saturate a cotton pad and sweep across my face.  Of course you can spray a cotton pad but it’s not the same as pouring.  It takes a little longer to soak the pad but I guess using less cotton pads is better for the environment (swings & roundabouts).

The UK is finally having the heat wave we have longed for and my tip for surviving the heat is to keep toner in the fridge.  Your toner will be nice and chilled and should help cool you down.

Since my last review Tropic have made slight changes to the ingredients of their toner, it now contains rose water. I know many people love the fragrance of rose but it is not one of my favourite scents so I was initially disappointed that the toner had changed.  However I will say that this particular rose fragrance is light and not artificial so I tolerate it.

Overall, despite the fragrance I still like how the toner feels on my skin.  It refreshes without feeling dry or tight. The toner also helps remove the last traces of makeup after cleansing.  You can purchase direct from Tropic website or  Feelunique.com. A 120ml bottle costs £11.95, not the cheapest but in my mind certainly worth the money.

Food Glorious (Free From) Food

I apologise my beauty blog has been hijacked in favour of food posts. My Boyfriend has made it his mission to make me fat, scratch that, to find me free from food I am lusting to try.  Free From food has been magically appearing in my fridge freezer over the past week.  I thought I would share what he has found.

Kirsty's (website link) has launched Free From Ready Meals into Sainsbury's. The range is free from dairy, gluten, egg, soya, artificial flavours and colours. You can chose from Sausage with Sweet Potato Mash, Cottage Pie with Sweet Potato Mash, Chicken Tikka Masala with Brown Rice, Spanish Chicken with Brown Rice and Moroccan Vegetables with Quinoa.  As a non meat eater with dairy and egg allergies the only one suitable for me is the Moroccan Vegetables. I was impressed by the portion size but I did find the taste slightly bland.  I sit on the fence when it comes to buying this again.

Amy's Kitchen gets a regular mention on my blog and at long last Tesco will be stocking some products (Sainsbury's beat them to it).  I understand the products are from the Light & Lean range (website link).  Check individual items for allergens as it does vary.  I can have the Spaghetti Italiano which is Vegan (dairy & egg free). This was delicious. I will definitely repurchase although it is proving hard to find in our local area.

My Boyfriend has also managed to track down (at a local health food store) Amy's Kitchen Gluten & Dairy Free Rice Macaroni & Cheeze. Double brownie points for him.  It was not being able to find this that made me create my own (click here).  Whilst cooking at home is better for you, I am all for cheating every now and again. I have not got around to trying this one so will have to report back at a later stage.

Have you tried any of these ready meals? Did you enjoy eating them?

100% Organics Cleanser

100% Organics has been on my radar long before blogging. I spotted the cleanser in TK Maxx for £11 which is a bargain worth grabbing as it retails for £29 (100ml). As the name suggests this is a 100% organic company. Apparently it is just one of a handful of companies in the world that are 100% Organic Soil Association accredited.  Products are created in Cornwall, are not tested on animals, suitable for vegetarians and free from synthetic ingredients.

This cleanser is a rich, soft balm similar to others on the market such as Suti and Lulu & Boo. I honestly can not find fault with the product. It leaves my skin feeling soft, glowing and without greasy residue. I like to spend time massaging into my skin and then I remove with a damp bamboo cloth. A muslin cloth would work in the same way but bamboo holds the heat so I like to hold it to my face for a few seconds before I start wiping. As you can see from the ingredients listed below this cleanser is full of natural goodness.

Ingredients - cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, olea europaea (olive) fruit oil, sesamum indicum (sesame) seed oil, cera alba (beeswax), simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, calophyllum inophyllum (tamanu) seed oil, corylus avellana (hazelnut) nut oil, lavandula angustifolia (lavender) flower oil, plantago major (plantain) leaf extract, calendula officinalis (marigold) flower extract, hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel) leaf extract, rosa canina (rose hip) fruit extract, pelargonium graveolens (geranium) flower oil, oenothera biennis (evening primrose) seed oil, anthemis nobilis (roman chamomile) flower oil, melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) leaf oil

The fragrance comes from essential oils and I pick up on the camomile and lavender. I imagine the cleanser may smell differently to others, there are many fragrances in the ingredients, just depends on your sense of smell.

I love balm cleansers so it is no surprise that I am enjoying using this. Now if like me you initially gasp at the retail price (£29 for 100ml) I have compared it other cleansing balms I have reviewed. Suti Cleanser £26 for 50ml (review link) and Lulu & Boo Organic Cleansing balm £23.50 for 50ml (review link). When you think about it the cleanser is reasonably priced compared to the competition. Overall, this gets a thumbs up from me.  If you see 100% Organic products in TK Maxx I suggest you grab a bargain.  Check out the website to view the rest of the range click here.
